The split / helical shape bites into the bolt head or nut and the mating surface to help resist loosening from vibration while distributing load; common retail/catalog dimensions list an ID ≈ 0.628–0.641 in, OD ≈ 1.069–1.087 in and typical thicknesses around 0.20 in for heavy‑duty/SAE styles.
